As anyone who frequents Simply Refined will already know by now, I am more than a little bit obsessed with books. Each year when I move back to school, the first purchase of the year is invariably another bookshelf to accommodate my ever-expanding personal library. If you enter any room I frequent, chances are it has more books than furniture.

We all known how flooded the market is with supposed “luxury goods” and “quality bespoke such-and-such,” but I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what sorts of things set apart the proverbial wheat from the chaff. To be honest, a lot of what I’ve been able to identify falls pretty simply into two categories: intensive craftsmanship and true creativity/individuality.

For men’s dressing, as for most things of consequence, I believe the devil is really in the details. These details are everything from the weave of a cloth to the pattern of socks or a pocket square to jewelry and accessories. It’s this last category I want to discuss for a moment, and a particularly undervalued accessory in particular – the collar bar.
