Perpendicular and Parallel
Honoré de Balzac once wrote “Carelessness in dressing is moral suicide,” but we know that if carelessness is the number one sin, a bit too much carefulness is not far behind. There are the two ever-present opposite concerns of looking disjointed or ill-conceived and appearing a mannequin with everything matched to a fault. The key, as with all things menswear (and truly all things in life) is balance.
Over the Coat
I’m just always warm. I wish it weren’t so. It makes wearing the clothes I like near-impossible most of the year. Flannel and tweed are just not conducive to keeping one cool. So, I wear them anyway and just deal with it. I suffer through linen jackets in the summer because a completely uncovered waist just looks ungainly to my eye. But the one thing I just can’t bear is an overcoat, and what a shame it is.
To London I Go
Well, here’s the surprise I promised: I’m currently on my way across the pond for a much-anticipated ten days in London. I don’t want to give everything away now, but keep your eyes out for some special interviews, updates on what is going on in and around Savile Row, and lots of great pictures.

Savile Row – A Coat of Many Colors
First of all, regardless of what else I’m about to say, don’t you just love this photo? Seriously amazing – click for a larger version. I suspect Guy Hills (the dapper gentleman perched atop the postbox) to be the photographer, although I’m not 100% sure. The photo is from Savile Row: The Master Tailors of British Bespoke, the beautiful new book from James Sherwood. I’ll be reviewing it here in the next week or so. Expect good things.
Fashion’s Domain
In his article entitled from the May 1900 issue of Fashion, The Baron states “If Fashion were concerned only with collars and cuffs, neckties and fancy vests – with clothes exclusively, to be brief, – its territory, surely, or the sphere of its influence, could hardly be dignified with the title of a “Domain.”
