Saving Swagger

Posted by: on Dec 29, 2010 | 3 Comments

The above picture is of Mr. Christian Chensfold, Editor and Proprietor of Ivy Style.  The post that accompanies said picture, entitled Inherent Swagger, received quite a bit of abuse yesterday.  And, being the opinionated fellow that I am, thought I would give my two cents here instead of in the comments box.

A number of people assaulted Mr. Chensfold for going overboard and combining too many elements of go-to-hell style in one outfit.  To that I say “Did you read the title?”  Swagger, to me, implies not just confidence but an almost exaggerated confidence.  Maybe this isn’t what Mr. Chensfold meant, but I think combining the hat, pipe, and coat, while a bit heavyhanded if done with too much seriousness, works splendidly if one carries oneself with a little whimsy.  That’s swagger.  It’s knowing you love how you look, that others might not, and that you, frankly, don’t give a damn.

So, to all of you who, like myself at times, might want to throw a few of your favorites together, I say go for it.  Walk with confidence, enjoy what you enjoy.  That’s real style.  Oh, and if you want to start donating to the “Buy Stephen a Polo Coat” fund, just shoot me an email.

I guess you are right that one cannot judge from pictures. The question always is if ones personality can bear that style. But still: clothes maketh man, and from the picture above one can conclude that Mr Chensfold must be what the French call flamboyant.
