Simply Refined Gift Guide 2010
Well everyone and their dog is writing up a gift guide, but here is my two cents:
$50 and Under
Armagnac – Too many people think whisky is the only gifting spirit. This time of year, a good bottle of Armagnac is my absolute favorite. More subtle and elegant than whisky, but more broody than cognac, Armagnac has a touch of rancio that just sets it apart from the rest. Laubade VSOP is a good entry level bottle at about 40 USD.
Bespoke: The Men’s Style of Savile Row – James Sherwood’s newest production is truly a sight to behold. I’ve only had my copy for two or three weeks and have already burned through most of the copy and poured many hours into lingering on the beautiful images. If you care at all about tailoring, or know someone who does, you’re only getting half the story if you haven’t read this book. At this price, order two while you’re at it – it may be the bargain of the season.
Smythson Stationary - Although at this price point bespoke is out of the question, the plain, no frills paper, cards, and envelopes make an impression on their own. Substantial, crisp, and enjoyable to handle, they’re everything that is wonderful about the good old physical letter. A variety of colors can be ordered online.
$100 and Under
Rubinacci Knit Tie - A little bit different that your usual knits, the Neapolitan tailors extraordinaire supply some of my favorite ties. Zig zags, candy stripes, and other patterns abound, but you’ll have to head to London, Milan, or Naples to get one. Sorry.
Umbrella - James Smith & Son would be my top choice at this price, but since they don’t do e-commerce either, if you’re not in London I vote Brooks Brothers. Their New Stick Umbrella is a solid, elegant choice. Every gent needs one.
Warby Parker Glasses – Under $100 for a new pair of glasses. Yes please. As you all know by now, I’m very invested in my specs, and a new pair is like getting offered a whole new look. Options abound, and rumor has it some new collections will be coming out soon, so tell them not to use the card too quickly.

Winkers from Carreducker – Velvet slippers are a traditional, and usual welcome, gift. But, if you want something with a bit more excitement, check out Winkers from Carreducker. Replace the velvet with tweed, and not just any tweed – Dashing Tweeds, Harris Tweeds, and organic Isle of Mull tweeds. If anyone is feeling especially generous, you now know my fantasy gift.
Wine Class – Here at Simply Refined, education is at the core. While a bottle of wine is nice, the opportunity to learn how to better appreciate and enjoy wine is nicer. Classes range in price, but can get up there. Berry Bros. in London do everything from basics to first growth Bordeaux, and your local wine shop should have various options available.
The Ralph Lauren Vice Box – It’s called a vice box for crying out loud. Decanter, crystal glasses, and poker supplies, all nestled away in a leather chest. Sign me up. For the person who actually has everything. Everything but this, that is.
