Sherry Baby

So I know only a few weeks ago I said my summer sipper was the Old Pulteney 12, but yesterday I stopped into Berry Bros. to pick up a gift and left with something for myself as well.

Currently I’m reading Dickens’ Bleak House, which sort of demands curling up in a chair with a glass of something good to enjoy it properly. So when I walked into Berry’s, I asked the embarrassingly broad question of “What would you recommend if I wanted to buy a split of something to enjoy while reading a good book this evening? White, Red, Fortified, anything really.” The gentleman, rather than guffawing as he probably should have, quite kindly showed me a list of what they had available and discussed the various options with me before we settled on a Manzanilla Amontillada Sherry from Lustau.

After enjoying it thoroughly, my conclusion is that Sherry is extremely underrated. I do buy it on occasion, but not nearly enough, and I very rarely hear people talk about it or see them serve it. Especially varieties like this and some lighter Fino sherries have a fantastic balance of fruity and nutty flavors that are both rich and refreshing. Consider this me charging everyone to go sip some Sherry (if you drink) and report back.
