Resolutions for 2012
Welcome back to Simply Refined after our holiday 2011 break. It was a pretty good year for us here, but I thought I’d start this year off with my new years resolutions for better shopping, dressing, and living in 2012.
First off, let’s start with shopping. I’m not afraid to admit that I really like the stuff in my life. But I could probably do with less of it. So for 2012 I’m going to try to stick to the old “buy less, buy better.” Quality beats out quantity every time, but it can be a much harder maxim to follow than you think.
I say I like my stuff, and I do get attached. That pair of shoes I can’t help but wear once or twice a week – I’d be pretty put out if I suddenly had to put them in the bin. So my goal is to buy as few things as possible this year that I don’t see myself having a few years down the road.
Sure you’ve got to have the semi-disposable basics – shirts, socks, and other stuff that inevitably wears out – but I’m going to try to keep my purchases focused in the longevity category. Hand-made shoes, high quality sport coats, and classic accessories will stay at the top of the list. It might be tough to keep your wallet in your pocket and to only pull it out for higher-ticket items, but I know that down the road these are the purchases I won’t regret.
With investment pieces also comes closing the basic gaps in my wardrobe. Personally, I’ve got the navy blazer, grey suit, and brown/black calf shoes, but there are some holes that need filling in. A pair of brown suede loafers comes to mind, as does a lightweight standby sport coat for the warmer months. Figure out where the holes in your wardrobe are, focus your purchases there, and soon you’ll be able to move on to the more unique stuff.
Finally the cliche advice. Without getting too preachy, I’ll say this: I’m going to try to enjoy life more. I spend a lot of time working on projects that I may or may not be that excited about, stress creeps up on me all too often, and more than I would like I find myself rushing through my days. Life can be hectic and still feel enjoyable, and that’s my goal for the year. Do more things I love, find ways to make the things I don’t more constructive, and take time to really enjoy each day.
Here’s wishing all the readers who made 2011 so special, and those who will make 2012 even better, a great year ahead!

January 13, 2012Yup. You nailed it. Perhaps it’s my rapidly advancing age, but I am far less satisfied with any “stop gap” purchase. Buy less, uh better. What you think you sacrifice in variety is made up in elegance. Perfectly suited to you is what it’s all about. Restraint, not constraint.
Keep fighting the good fight,
