Opera Rant

So we’ve all heard me rant about decorum and dressing whilst traveling, but now it’s opera time. I went to the opera this Saturday evening, yes, Saturday evening, and must say I was appalled. Truly, truly appalled.

I know that expecting everyone to be in dinner jacket or evening gown is a bit ridiculous these days, and I was not wearing one myself, but can we just show a little respect please? One gentleman felt the need to show up to the evening’s performance in a turquoise Abercrombie & Fitch T shirt which read “You Know You Want Me,” while another thought an untucked short-sleeve button up with graphic flame prints all over it would nicely compliment his confederate flag branded shoes.

Women were mostly no better, with rompers, leggings as pants, and extremely short skirts abound. I’m no prude, but this is the opera. I really do feel like a curmudgeon when things like this happen, but is a jacket and collared shirt for gentlemen and a reasonably clean and respectable-looking outfit for women too much to ask for?
