Interesting post! However, I must disagree on the layers part: the more layers you put on, the more air you trap close to your body and therefore, the more you insulate it. You may say "alright, I insulate it from the hot air so I stay cool, just the same as putting a thick protection around the beers at the beach". The problem is that your body permanently generates heat that needs to be released, so in hot weather, you definitely don't want thermal insulation.
OK there is a counter example: bedouins in the desert wearing underwear plus huge black thick wool dresses. But this is a very specific case. Most of all these people need not to loose water because they have very little to drink, so they actually don't want air to dry their sweat. That's not comfortable but that saves your life... On top of that their very ample dresses, because they are black (or very dark), establish a strange thermal equilibrium (a mix of hot air convection and radiation balance between the dress and the body), which, by the way, doesn't work with a white dress.
So, no, you clearly feel cooler in a large T-shirt than with 3 layers, even of light linen or cotton seersucker.
But I totally agree that a jacket hides your sweat patches and makes you look way better, and that it is enough to justify the choice !
Love your blog, all the best.
