The Little Luxuries – A Dressing Gown
“We live in an age when unnecessary things are our only necessities.” – Oscar Wilde
While many things one enjoys may seem like frivolous luxuries, sometimes they are much more indispensable than we give them credit for. In an age of increased efficiency and constant connectivity, things which are truly personal and indulgent sometimes become what we really need to stay sane. And this doesn’t mean they need be expensive – just important to us and a little bit special.
A Wee-Confession
Forgive me, for I have sinned. Rather, I had sinned and now have seen the light. This week I purchased and wore my first pair of Weejuns. Two of them actually – since I waited so long, one just didn’t seem enough. Truth be told, the Bass outlet had a special two for one, so burgundy and black both got swept up.
My mother assures me I had a few pairs when I was younger, but if so, it is beyond my current memory. First released in 1936, Weejuns were the mainstay footwear of the Ivy Look of the 1960s that I have written about before. And for something that truly has been around for quite a while, they look it. Weejuns seem to me to be that rare but great mix of classic and still cool that always looks a little retro but modern at the same time.
I have been alternating the two pairs for a few days now, trying to break them both in quickly, and already I can’t imagine how I ever wore chinos and OCBDs without them. Casually elegant, comfortable (albeit stiff) from the start, and great with or without socks, they are looking like my go-to shoes for this summer. My drivers haven’t even come out of their box yet, and that my friends is saying something.
The Inelegance of Travel
This past week I traveled home from University, and must say I was more than a bit appalled by what I saw in the airports and on the planes. Now this was no long trek – a simple hour and a half flight, followed by a short thirty minute connecting flight with just an hour layover in between. Should be uneventful, right?
Crab for Breakfast
Saturday I made brunch for the family, as per my younger brother’s request. Every time I come for a visit, the one inevitable meal is Crab Eggs Benedict. I thought I would take a cue from Mr. Chris Cox over at Easy & Elegant Life and share one of my favorite recipes.
Young and Old
So last Friday I preached the good word of the Ardbeg Ten, and said that I would have a bottle of eight year old Glenrothes waiting for me at home. Well when I arrived, it turned out to be a bottle of eight year old Highland Park from the same bottling series. While I don’t think I could ever be upset at finding a bottle of Highland Park in my cabinet, this also ended up giving me a fantastic learning opportunity.
