Re-Watching Metropolitan

I’ve seen Whit Stillman’s masterpiece-of-manners a few times, but I rewatched it this weekend and particularly enjoyed it.  If you haven’t seen it, do so as soon as you can.  I promise you won’t regret it.  It’s on Netflix instant queue if you have it.

My favorite scene is after Nick takes Tom to Brooks to get a wintercoat, and they start talking about Nick’s removable collars.  He tells Tom that while few people wear them, they’re a symbol.  They symbolize the refusal to give in to “supposed convenience” and to stand against the encroaching barbarism of the day.  While a bit melodramatic, and meant to be slightly laughable in Nick’s case, I appreciate the sentiment overall.

Today’s a good day for that sentiment too.  Pamper yourself or your loved one.  Don’t give in to modern convenience – wear a buttonhole, open that bottle of above-ordinary champagne, or just plain enjoy yourself without worrying about what stresses await the next day at the office.  Actually enjoy yourself.  Happy Valentines Day everyone.
