So, today’s the day. Oral half of my honors exams, t minus 4 hours and counting. I am already thinking about what reward I will be mixing up and enjoying before throwing on the bowtie and patent loafers and sauntering off to the celebratory banquet feeling 20 pounds lighter.
It was only two weeks ago that I extolled the virtues of winter ties and claimed that spring was not yet coming. Oh how very wrong I was. Temperatures are now regularly creeping close to 60 degrees Fahrenheit, and my coats have possibly seen their final days until fall. Along with putting the coat a bit further back in the closet, comes the yearly color and fabric changes of spring.
Metal buttons in a gentleman’s wardrobe are confined almost exclusively to the gold-tone buttons of the blazer. That said, I am not usually fond of wearing gold or brass jewelry and furnishings, and thus usually avoid brass buttoned blazers. It was only a few months ago that I saw in a West End shop window a beautiful double breasted number fitted with silver buttons; I had been living in Plato’s cave my whole life and finally caught a glimpse of the sun.
For this Spring, the ever-stylish team at Oliver Peoples has re-released the old flip-up sunglasses that clip onto their normal Riley frames (which I happen to not-so-coincidentally wear). Very retro, a little affected, and a lot of fun. I think Elijah Wood carries them off nicely here, albeit in a way which many cannot.
